In 2009, Vilnius becomes European Capital of Culture – the gate to the country celebrating its name millennium.
The programme “Vilnius – European Capital of Culture 2009” (VECC) is the first and probably the only occasion in history when Europe’s most successful and most prestigious culture project can become historic success of the Lithuanian State in Europe.
Vilnius has long been famous for hospitality, different nations used to live here with one accord and visitors would feel the city’s friendly atmosphere in no time and stay here for good. |
| Indeed, among all travel memories the most precious one is that which reminds the warm and hospitable country where you feel awaited guest rather than redundant intruder. |
It feels good to be welcomed with a smile and a caring attitude. The cosy city leaves an imprint in your memory and makes you want to return here and bring your family and friends.
In the attempt to promote amiable service to Vilnius citizens and visitors, improve the service quality and ensure broad publicity for the programme “Vilnius – European Capital of Culture 2009”, VECC and the Lithuanian Hotel and Restaurant Association take the initiative to start the Hospitality Project “Vilnius’09 Invites”.
What are the aims of VECC hospitality project “Vilnius’09 Invites”?
- To promote hospitable service to Vilnius citizens and visitors;
- To ensure broad and good-quality publicity for VECC through the help of service providers and public services operating in the City of Vilnius;
- To help the service sector improve the quality of service.

1. In July more than 300 spots such as cafes, restaurants, hotels, tourist and information centres, taxis and art galleries were selected participants, i.e. Friends, of the project “Vilnius’09 Invites”.
2. In August those spots were marked with the special logo of the hospitality project, which means that:
• everyone is welcome here; • here customers are attended to amiably and to the highest standard; • here you can find information about VECC events.
All Friendly spots will also offer reference stands with constantly updated information about VECC events, the LT – 1000 programme and the City of Vilnius.
3. We have invited Friends’ staff to attend trainings about good-quality customer service and the programme “Vilnius – European Capital of Culture 2009”.
In 2008, we have 300 friendly spots and hope to get several times more in 2009.
Let’s smile to each other and create a hospitable and cosy atmosphere in Vilnius!
